I have never had a tournament stream go this badly, in what can only be described as an extinction level catastrophe all my previously tried and true stream hardware began to fail, blue screens, crashes, ctrl+alt+delete's and even system restores, shit went down and it went down hard. Not only did my primary (relatively new) desktop stream machine crash but my laptop wouldn't even work (The same one which I used 8 days earlier to stream a smash 4 tournament) Absolutely nothing went right on the stream front and I ended up packing it up early and handing it over to the secondary streamer, who did a great job, although commentary for finals was not what I had hoped for. To pile onto all of it I was scrambling to get ready for top 8 at 9pm which was to be on the twitch front page. It still was but I was unfortunately not a part of it, a personal emergency had me leaving about ten minutes after I was done with my pool and I did not stay for commentary and as fate would have it neither did the other primary commentary for the event. Although I am not sure what happened there. Absolutely everything on my end with the stream was a complete and total disaster and I now have to scramble to get a new machine in two weeks time for another tournament. But hey on the bright side I did pretty well in pools.
Mofat VS MH
This guy picked Samus so I was instantly not worried about the match up since Yatta Dante and I had hours of Fox vs. Samus under our belts, suffice it to say I was no stranger to the match up, and it didn't help that he was mostly new to the game, it was a quick 2-0
Mofat VS Chumbawumbaler
He picked Luigi and I was slightly worried because I am a tad rusty in the Lugi VS Fox match up but it still went pretty well, I was mostly caught off guard by his jump down airs, I don't really see Luigi's going for something like that, but it worked, he was calling out my jumps and punishing pretty effectively, fortunately I caught on and stopped jumping into the traps and just let him put out whatever he was going to put out and then went in for the punish, and as it is with Luigi once I got him off stage it was no big deal to just ride it out until he exhausted his recovery options and I punished his up b. 2-0 victory.
Mofat Vs. Jordova
I went into this prepared to lose because I've seen Jordon play enough times to know that he can out Fox me (Literally). I have quite a bit of fox ditto practice, again with Yatta Dante. But I was unfortunately quite rusty on my throw punishes which would come back to bite me later. Game 1 was incredibly close, I got the first stock with some shine shenanigans and then he got me with some chain grab punishes, both of us were doing rather well with getting a good chunk of percent off of one grab, he did it by chain grabbing me, I did it by being on point with follow ups, unfortunately his close outs were definitely more consistent than mine were and I lost game 1
Game 2
Game 1 was so close that I had a lot of confidence that I could win the set, but I knew I had to play very on point and I could not miss any punishes. Again I claimed the first stock in game 2 with shine shenanigans, after tacking on about 40% or so my stock was taken. Again this game was extremely, extremely close, last hit last stock. There was an edge guard off the left side of dreamland that netted me a win for game 2.
Game 3
1-1 vs Jordova, a player clearly better than me, I was pretty happy with myself at that point. However game 3 is where the better player usually shows that they are in fact the better player. He counter picked to Pokemon stadium after I banned FD, he had shown me how good his chain grabs were and there was no way in hell I was going to let him take me there under any circumstances. Going into game 3 I knew that my biggest weakness would be that I didn't have chain grabs down as well as he did and that proved to be the tipping point for the set as he took 2 of my stocks in under a minute with chain grabs and edge guards. I reassessed my spacing strategy and decided that trying to beat him in the grab game was a bad idea, I had to slow the pace of the match down and try to catch him in the middle of a missed L-cancel(which never happened) or some sort of landing lag, I got a few grabs off but my punishes were not nearly on the same level and I just couldn't get the same mileage off of them, It was looking like a very grim 3 stock but I did manage to bring it back to a "respectable" 2 stock game. I lost of course but I still feel like I played really well, especially considering I was going up against someone clearly better with fox.
Mofat vs Shakezula
Puff, its always puff these days, I usually do quite well in bracket and then I hit a match up and I am so unpracticed in that the most basic bread and butter combos for that character work wonders on me, to be clear there are really not that many match ups I do not know and know well, but puff is definitely the one I know nearly nothing about. I got eliminated by a puff at northwest majors drop zone, twice, I got eliminated by a puff at melee at epic, and I was beaten by one here as well, I clearly have a lot of practice to do. Game 1 was a travesty, as fox I was 3 stocked, I just couldn't play the match up right. Game 2 I switched to Link and went to battlefield, I did pretty well, I sd'd almost immediately, shakezula being the bro he is sd'd as well and we had ourselves a 3 stock match. I should clarify, from that point on I played reasonably well with Link and did ok, I used some Link shenanigans he didn't know about and barely won game 2. Game 3 he went to fd and it was kinda sorta a good match for me, my rage got the better of me towards the end and I just played very badly during the last stock and was beaten. We shook hands, said gg's and I walked off mumbling curse words and shit talking puff. And I really feel if I had beaten Shakezula I would have made it out of pools, something I have absolutely never done before. I have taken many 3rd's and 4ths in pools (Always taking 3rd when top 2 make it out and 4th when top 3 make it out) but I have never gotten out.
I have been getting closer and close these days every time I am in a pool I take 4th usually so things are looking up, but that damn puff match up has to be dealt with.
