So I actually went and had a tournament yesterday. Two to be specific. The first was SSF2 Strike Back! a doubles tournament, the other was singles, TTZ Weekly # 16. Overall, because of random forefits I placed high in both tournaments. The general rundown was this
SSF2 Strike Back!
I teamed with another Mississauga smasher, AxeEnding999. Shoutouts to that guy! He's supportive of me, even though my skill level was far below those around me.
Winners Quarters: vs. Kyoz + Chaos0
Score: 0 - 2
This really put my skill into perspective with the other people. I was the sheep among wolves, and it sure showed! During those two games, they showed some excellent playing, and I wasn't sure if they were going all out either! (I have no clue about Chaos0's main, but I was fairly certain DK was a secondary). In both games, I'm pretty sure that Axe had to 2 v 1 near the end, that was some really good play too! Overall, I was glad I could finally witness their skill (even if it was just a portion of it) for myself. I hope to get better and fight them next time!
P.S: Screw that % glitch; happened the 2nd to me mid-set, I could see the dissappointment in Chaos0 witnessing my noob comprehension firsthand.
Losers Quarters: vs. AlphaSad + EpicSteve2
Score: 2 - 0
This one was interesting to say the least. These guys were closer to my level (higher thou), and they had the right idea. First game was interesting, AlphaSad's ZSS help me get even more experience in the BM vs ZSS knowledge (a matchup I guess I'm going to use later on?). First game was pretty close, need to pull the replays if they were there. 2nd game was a different story.
AlphaSad switched to Kirby, while Steve kept playing Mario (nice to see another Mario main!). As a joke, we decided to play a match with bumpers on DreamLand (ratio might have been high as well?). In any case, it was everyone going in and fighting a war on two fronts: the opposing team, and the bumpers. In the end it was us that won, but what I found hilarious was that counted towards the set count, so we proceeded further into bracket
Shoutouts to those two, and especially EpicSteve2. He showed me another method of gimping BM, and him just taking AlphaSad's last stock in Game 2 was priceless.
Losers Semis: vs. Way2Phet + OreoCakester
Score: N/A
All I remember was Way2Phet fore-fitting, not much to comment there.
Losers Finals: Kyoz vs. Chaos0
Score: N/A
Kyoz and Chaos0 were getting bored (I mean, top players are probably more bored than us noobs), so they fore-fitted their match. We then made it into Grand Finals in record time
Grand Finals: vs. TLord + AlphaHatsuseno [Winners]
Score: 2 - 3
This was definitely the most disarrayed Grand Finals I've ever been to (my first Grand Finals actually). Here's what went down.
Game 1: Axe (BM) + Taiga (BM) vs. TLord (Fox) + AlphaHats (Kirby)
Long story short, they played frickin awesome, I got double-hammered by AlphaHats, and Axe had to 2 v 1. He pretty much gimped TLord twice (I blame Fox, not TLord), and then Axe lost. The hard part was after this, we couldn't get all of us playing at once...
Game 2 + 3
We waited for so long for all of us to be together, I eventually had to eat dinner and missed these two games. TLord and Axe were at FlashItUp: The Replacement, and AlphaHatsu had a group project. While I was eating, I heard that they 2 v 1 (The other team had 2 stocks each to make it fair), and Axe won both times, putting us at 2 - 1
Game 4: Me (Puff) vs. AlphaHatsu (Marth)
At this point, Axe got busy and he allowed me and AlphaHatsu to 1 v 1 (TLord was having laptop problems). IIRC, We went on Yoshi's Story and I got bodied there. Yoshi's Story is a small stage and with Marth having spacing benefits, I would die around 50-60% if I wasn't careful. Sure enough, I couldn't exactly pull it off and I lost
Game 5: Me (Puff) vs. AlphaHatsu (DK)
This was honestly me trying to play REALLY safe. Just like Marth, I had to make sure that I didn't take too much damage. While the CP (Dream Land) was pretty big preventing me from dying too early, I was fighting DK. I had to worry about ALL his smashes, charged Giant Punch, among other things. He also had a good range advantage, so this wasn't going to be easy since my knowledge about MU's are pretty much zero to none lol
In the end, I lost two stocks in a pathetic armor: one was being Up-B while trying to WoP (now I realize why people see the up-b as broken XD) and I was also trying to overextend and had an "asthma attack". So Alpha won it for their team and Team Sauga had to take Silver this time around
Overall, I think this was a very good experience. I got to witness the top players in action (Kyoz, Chaos0, Blaze/Axe , AlphaHatsu, pretty much everyone there) and I got to use a character that I never use usually. I feel kinds bad that I kind of costed our team the win, but hey, it was fun! I honestly might try to seriously get better at this game just to see if I can do it. Anyways, this was my first tournament experience, make sure you join a tournament! The experience there is indispensable and you can have some fun along the way (can't guarantee that there will be no salt, that is a well known component of tournament play). Anyways, I might make more blog posts, but for now, this should be fine. I'll try to write about my first singles tournament, but no promises ;)
