I could tell you all about pikachu, but that does not replace the years of trying to understand the quirks and cranies of a character. If you want to become good at anything, whether it's art, a job or this character, another character or whatever, there are a couple things you should know.
1] There are no shortcuts to becoming what you envision.
We all want to be good. It feels good to win consistently over and over, being told you're strong or "I want to be just like you". The fact is, it's a long road to the top of you want to rock and roll. You think Nairo, Abadango, RAIN, Otori, Zero, M2K and others were instantly great out of the box? No, simply put. They, I and many others put in the time to understand the characters, the game and the psychology of the human mind to become better at this game.
It took me 4 years during the time of brawl to become above decent in the Japanese scene and not only recognized as a good foreign player, but also be able to hold my own against the great and top players. It took me 3 years to start understanding that these games are psychological, and the outcome of the match can be thought out and scripted.
So, is it hard? Of course. Is it a long journey? A ridiculous amount when I first started. The matter of the fact is, I and the other players you think deem good enjoy the pain of it. The longer you play the game, the better and more satisfying it becomes.
2] Don't kick yourself in the junk. It hurts.
We all go through the best and worst times in our times of playing, it's normal. At times, you'll feel that you just suck, and perhaps you're not wrong; however, thinking that is like kicking a dog with dirt to face after it has returned home exhausted from being lost. Why would you do that to the dog, let alone yourself?
You have to remember, it's normal to lose. The right way to handle it is to thinking about and analysis what you've done. Record those replays and watch them, looking for the key moments that decided the victor and what options and things you note for next time. You'll be amazed what you can find from a single match.
3] It's a game. Nothing more, nothing less.
This is something that took me a couple years to figure out when I started out. This game is meant to be a fun activity. Yes, we may play it competitively and sometimes for money, but the real reason everyone comes out to tournaments and smashfests is to enjoy the game and what they have to offer. If you're not having fun, then it's a job, and no one likes having just a job.
Ultimately, the journey to greatness can only be forged by you, and you alone. There are no shortcuts to the top. We all must climb the ladder with one another to get there and as you climb, you help others get to the destination too.
